Reading Log week 6

1 hour    The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan    pgs. 206-237
Changes over time: At first, Hylla hated Percy and wanted to kill him. Now in the present, she wants to help him, Frank, and Hazel escape.
"You were incredibly foolish to come here," she said. "You destroyed my home. You made my sister and me exiles and prisoners."
Thsi shows Hylla's hate for Percy in the beginning. Now, since she must fight another warrior, she wants to help him escape.

Patterns: There is a pattern of the introduction of each characters' powers. First, Percy shows his water powers, then Frank shows his powers with his spear, and then HAzel shows how she can use her jewelry powers in this scene.
"The entire pallot fo jewelry exploded with ta sound like a thousand slot machines hitting the jackpot. A tidal wave of silver friendship bracelets poured across the catwalk, washing Doris and Lulu right over the railing. They would've fallen to their deaths, but Hazel wasn't that mean. She summoned a few hundred bracelets, which leaped at the guards and lashed around their ankles, leaving them hanging upside down from the bottom of the catwalk, screaming like little girls."
This is an example of how the author expresses Hazel's power. Frnak and Percy alkso has special powers, and are portrayed in a similar way as this.

Reading log week 5

1 hour   The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan    pgs. 118- 163
Details: Before Percy, Frank, and Hazel start off on their quest, Reyna has a talk with Percy, and gave him tips for the quest. She tells him about how she knew him before.
"But at the door of principia, Percy couldn't resist turning. "How did we destroy your home, the spa where you live?
The metal greyhounds growled. Reynna snapped her fingers to silence them.
"You destroyed the power of our mistress," she said. "You freed some prisoners who took revenge on all of us who lived on the island. My sister and I...well, we survived. It was difficult. But in the long run, I think we are better off away from that place."
This quote shows that Reyna knew Percy from before. Even though Percy lost his memory, he was still able to learn more about his past in order to gain more knowledge of who he is.

Different Perspectives: What the Roman demigods were taught was that cyclops and centaurs were all bad, but to Percy, he knew deep within that this wasn't true.
"Centaurs," Percy said. "But ...that's not right. Centaurs and good guys."
Frank made a choking sound. "  That's not what we were taught at camp. Centaurs are crazy, always getting drunk and killing heroes."
Percy is confused, because he knew in his past that he was friends with centaurs and cyclopses, so he was confused about the fact that the Romans were taught that centaurs and cyclopses were bad.

Reading log week 4

1 hour   The Son of Neptune by Rick Riordan   pgs. 82-117
Different Perspectives: Percy believes the people of the 5th Cohort are strong and good people. But the people of higher up cohorts think they are losers and look down on them.
"The Third and Fourth Cohorts weren't even advancing. They stood back and laughed, watching their "allies" get beat up. The defenders clustered on the wall above the gates, yelling insults at the tortoise formation as it staggered back and forth. War games had deteriorated into "beat up the fifth"."
This shows the 3rd and 4th cohorts' disrespect for the 5th cohort. They betrayed them and just let them get beat up by the 1st and 2nd cohort.

Changes over time: In the beginning, Percy hadn't known anything about his life after he lost his memory. But over time, he regained more knowledge, through meeting people he formerly met, such as Ares, or Mars.
"Frank noticed that one person wasn't kneeling. Percy Jackson, his sword in his hand, was glaring at the soldier.
'You're Ares,' Percy said. 'What do you want?'
A collective gasp went up from two hundred campers and an elephant."
This shows how Percy is slowly gaining back his memory. HE intially forgot Ares, but now after he sees him, he remembers.
